Marta Stewart is generally esteemed as a popular figure with a widespread fan base.
However, she recently faced criticism for a recent social media post during her Greenland trip, which many are deeming “tone-deaf.”
Despite receiving widespread acclaim earlier this year for her appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue in May, her latest Instagram post from a cruise along the east coast of Greenland failed to generate the same level of positivity.
On Tuesday, August 29, Stewart shared a photo from the cruise, capturing the beauty of the east coast of Greenland. The image, one of several, depicts the businesswoman and TV personality enjoying a cocktail, accompanied by the caption:
“End of the first zodiac cruise from @swanhelleniccruises into a very beautiful fjord on the east coast of Greenland. We actually captured a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight.”
Despite Stewart’s likely harmless intentions, the post quickly drew criticism from followers who perceived her use of a “small iceberg” for her drink as inappropriate.
In no time, Martha Stewart’s comment section was flooded with individuals expressing disapproval over her reference to a small iceberg while acknowledging that the “ice caps are melting.”
“Martha, the ice caps are melting; don’t put them in your drink,” cautioned one Instagram user.
Another contributor shared, “I generally love Martha and the extravagances of her life because she’s about beautiful gardens, homes, and food, but wealthy white people drinking their iceberg cocktails while the planet is in flames is a bit tone-deaf.”
A third commenter humorously remarked, “So as the climate warms due to the profits of a couple thousand people, billionaires vacation to the melting icebergs, scoop them up, and use them to keep their cocktails cold. That sounds like a line from a dystopian novel. Can’t make this shit up lol.”
“Global warming and melting ice caps, but we need glacier ice for cocktails?! Talk about tone-deaf. Been a fan for years, but I’ve seen enough caviar lately as I struggle to buy groceries that I’m out,” concluded a fourth individual.
In May, Martha Stewart made history by confidently posing in daring swimsuits for the cover of Sports Illustrated at the age of 81. She also divulged the details of the rigorous wellness routine she followed.
“I didn’t starve myself, but I didn’t eat any bread or pasta for a couple of months,” Stewart revealed during an appearance on the Today show.
“I went to Pilates every other day, and that was great; I’m still going to Pilates every other day ’cause it’s so great. And I just, I live a clean life anyway – good diet and good exercise and healthy skincare and all of that stuff.”
During her keynote speech at a Las Vegas event, Stewart shared the positive response from fans to the “authentic” cover.
“The response to it was really encouraging because it made women of all ages feel like, ‘If she can do it, then I can do it too,’” Stewart noted.
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue cover featuring Martha Stewart, 81, received attention and was posted by The New York Times on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
