When Edith overheard a conversation between her husband, Peter, and his mother, Annie, she uncovered shocking truths about her marriage that ultimately saved her life.
“Hey there, lovely people! I’m Edith, a 28-year-old newlywed and proud cat mom. My husband Peter and I had stable jobs and a happy life, planning an amazing future together. Then, my mother-in-law Annie crashed into our picture.”
Annie constantly compared Peter’s achievements to Edith’s, which Edith initially brushed off. However, during Annie’s visit, Edith overheard a conversation through the open window. Annie was crying, upset that Peter was washing dishes, and calling Edith a problem. Peter’s response, “Don’t worry, Mom, she won’t be a problem,” shocked Edith.
Confronting Peter, Edith discovered he expected her to quit her job and become an “obedient wife.” Furious, she declared, “I have dreams, Peter. Ambitions. I’m not going to throw them all away for a sink full of dirty dishes!”
Peter’s insistence on outdated gender roles clashed with Edith’s vision of an equal partnership. Realizing their fundamental differences, Edith decided to file for divorce, saying, “Apparently, Peter, we weren’t on the same page about what ‘married’ means.”
