Paraguay’s Luana Alonso was expelled from the 2024 Paris Olympics for creating an “inappropriate atmosphere” in the Olympic Village, as stated by Larissa Schaerer, head of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee.
Alonso, 20, failed to advance in the women’s 100m butterfly on July 27 and announced her retirement from swimming. Reports indicated she wore inappropriate outfits, disregarding the official team gear, which became a distraction. Alonso also faced criticism for visiting Disneyland Paris and exploring the city instead of supporting her teammates. Consequently, she was asked to move to a hotel, which she did without conflict.
After leaving the Olympic Village, Alonso returned to the U.S., where she is a student at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas. She announced her retirement on Instagram, thanking her supporters and reflecting on her swimming career. Alonso made her Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but did not medal in either Tokyo or Paris.
